Our first Singaporean graduate of the University was Go Khek Ghee, who graduated BSc in 1916. An article was published in The Straits Times of 10 September 1901 recounting Ghee’s pioneering first visit to the UK for his education. Although this visit was cut short due to difficulties encountered with the English language, Ghee returned to the UK soon thereafter and passed his preliminary examinations in Mathematics, English and French at Aberdeen in 1909, before coming to Glasgow to study for his degree in Engineering.
The next Singaporean students came after World War II, from the 1950s onwards.
From 1870 – 1965 around 46 students born in Singapore attended the University, however our connections to Singapore through our alumni date back to the early 1800s. We’ll be featuring one of these prominent graduates on Monday, so stay posted!
