Did you know? Mexico

To mark the forthcoming Independence Day celebrations of Mexico: The University’s first Mexican student was Xalapan-born Joaquín María del Castillo y Lanzas, the prominent Mexican politician, journalist, and diplomat.

Castillo y Lanzas attended the University of Glasgow from 1816-1818, taking the Greek classes of John Young, or “Cocky Bung” as his students named him, and also the Logic classes of Professor George Jardine. He was awarded prizes for both courses.

Returning from his studies in Europe to Mexico, Castillo y Lanzas went on to hold a variety of public and diplomatic offices, contributing to the development of this nascent country, which had gained its Independence from Spain in 1821.
