The founder of Japanese Whisky, Masataka Taketsuru

The University’s alumni magazine, Avenue, this month has published an article on yet another of our pioneering early Japanese students – Masataka Taketsuru was the founder of Nikka Whisky Distilling Company, and with it, the founder of the successful Japanese whisky industry.

Taketsuru studied Organic Chemistry at the University of Glasgow in the summer of 1919 under Thomas Stewart Patterson, the first Gardiner Professor of Chemistry at the University, while serving an apprenticeship at Hazelburn Distillery in Campbeltown.

You can read more about the man who took not only Whisky back to Japan, in the Avenue article here.
