Earliest links with Dominica

With the Baton Relay arriving at Dominica today (19.03.2014), our earliest connection with Dominica come with Arts student in 1833 and barrister, Alan Ker, among whose various legal appointments around the then British West Indies, was Chief Justice of Dominica from 1856 to 1861. This was at a time when Dominica was the first British Caribbean colony to have a legislature controlled by an African majority (from 1838).
