Argentina and Naval Architecture at the University of Glasgow

Argentina y los estudios de ingeniería naval en la Universidad de Glasgow, Escocia.

Between 1892 and 1921, the University welcomed eleven Argentine-born students to study Naval Architecture.  The John Elder Chair of Naval Architecture was founded in 1883 , and the Argentine-born students studied under Sir John Harvard Biles; they were Federico Martínez, Horacio Victor Pereyra, Lorenzo Saborido, Jacinto Zenón Caminos Rodeyro, José Giuliani, Manuel Ireneo Bianchi, Francisco De Asis Victor Alba Sabado (matriculated Francisco Alba y Labado), José Manuel Pirovano Naón, Virgilio Piñeiro, Raúl Tassier, and Pierre François Huni.

Many of these students went on to join the Argentine Navy, some commanding ships on Antarctic Expeditions, others following in their father’s footsteps: José Giuliani’s father had purchased the first passenger paddle steamer from the Dumbarton shipbuilders, William Denny & Bros. in 1879; Manuel Ireneo Bianchi’s father was a naval architect and shipbuilder.
