Today (18.01.2014) it’s the turn of Tanzania to receive the Baton. With stories still to be uncovered about the country that was once Zanzibar and Tanganyika, we can say that our first Tanzania-born student was ‘out of this world‘ when he starred as Captain Andrew ‘Jet’ Morgan in the famous BBC radio science fiction programme of the 1950s, Journey into Space.
Anyone remember that popular series? [The students may think that you have to be ‘as old as the world’ to remember it!]
Another of our ‘out of this world’ links with Tanzania comes from the University’s international heritage collections:
The Hunterian holds this unique crystal of blue zoisite that was first discovered in 1967 in the Manyara Region in the north-east of the United Republic of Tanzania. It was Tiffany & Co. of New York that named the mineral ‘tanzanite’ after Tanzania.
